Most business owners never get real tax planning. They get a return, once a year, after every decision that mattered was already made. Astute Advisors was built to work the other way around.
Book Your Free ConsultationKaren Yu spent the early part of her career in accounting at major Los Angeles companies. She kept seeing the same pattern: capable owners who were very good at making money, and who had no one giving them proactive guidance on what it was costing them in tax.
She founded Astute Advisors in 2018 to close that gap. The firm sits in Torrance and works with clients across the South Bay and the rest of California. Planning is the core service here, not an add-on that surfaces when a return looks expensive.
That conviction shapes everything else: the calendar, the size of the client list, and the kind of conversations a client can expect during the year rather than after it.
Our clients are business owners, entrepreneurs, professionals, and high-net-worth individuals whose finances have outgrown a once-a-year filing relationship. The common thread is complexity that keeps moving: entity structure, owner compensation, retirement design, property, investments, and timing decisions that all interact.
Most are in Torrance and the wider South Bay. Many are elsewhere in California, and some are further afield. Meetings happen over video and documents move through a secure portal, so distance rarely changes the quality of the work.
We are also candid about fit in both directions. If a planning engagement is unlikely to pay for itself in your situation, we will say so in the first conversation rather than sell you something that does not earn its keep.
Strategy is a cadence, not a single meeting. Each quarter has a job, and the work compounds through the year.
Review the prior year, confirm entity and compensation choices, set estimated payments, and map the decisions most likely to affect tax and cash flow.
Compare actual performance against the forecast, review retirement and benefit options, and update the plan while there is still time to act on it.
Project taxable income, model purchases or investments, coordinate business and personal decisions, and build a practical year-end action list.
Complete the selected strategies, verify estimated payments, gather documentation, and enter filing season with fewer surprises and a cleaner handoff.
Every position we take is one we would calmly explain to the IRS. Savings that cannot survive scrutiny are not savings, so strategies are documented as they are implemented rather than reconstructed later.
Plans are written in plain language. If a strategy cannot be explained simply, it is not understood well enough to recommend. Your plan should read like a set of decisions, not a set of statutes.
Technology handles the chasing so people can handle the thinking. Organized requests, secure document exchange, e-signatures, and clear next steps mean fewer errands for you and more time for us to look at your actual numbers.

Book Your Free Consultation No pressure, no obligation. Just clarity.Karen Yu founded the firm in 2018 after working in accounting at major Los Angeles companies. She built Astute around the proactive planning she watched successful owners go without, and she still leads the planning work today.
Our office is in Torrance, in the South Bay, and we work with clients throughout California. Because meetings are held over video and documents move through a secure portal, where you sit rarely affects how the engagement runs.
A traditional engagement is built around the filing deadline, so the work happens after the decisions. Ours is built around a quarterly rhythm, so entity structure, compensation, retirement funding, and timing get looked at while you can still change them.
No. Some clients start with tax planning alone and add preparation at the next filing season. Others bring monthly accounting or CFO advisory in later, once the business needs it. We scope the starting point in the first conversation.
Business owners and high-net-worth individuals with growing complexity, who want an ongoing advisory relationship instead of an annual transaction. If planning is unlikely to pay for itself in your situation, we will tell you that up front.
